The process described below will add a new lab test result to both the indicated medical event and its associated patient record. If the lab test result you would like to add to the medical event record has already been added to the patient record, you only need to link the medical event to that existing lab test result record — see Linking a Medical Event to a Previously Entered Lab Test Result Record for instructions on how to do this.

To add a new lab test result record to both a medical event and its associated patient record:

1. Open the Medical Event Detail window for the medical event in question. See Viewing/Editing a Medical Event for instructions on how to do this.

2. Select the Details tab.

3. Click on the + button above the Tests grid on that tab.

The Link Test Result window will open.

It is suggested that you double-check the Tests grid on the Link Test Result window to make certain that the lab test result that you are adding has not already been added to the patient record. If it has, it will appear in the grid, and you should link to it rather than entering a new lab test result record. See Linking a Medical Event to a Previously Entered Lab Test Result Record for instructions on how to do this. (Start with step 4 in that topic, since you will have already completed the previous steps while following the instructions in the current topic.)

4. Click on the + button above the Tests grid on the Link Test Result window. The Link Test Result window will close, and the Add Test Result window will open.

5. Enter the test result information into the fields on the window. See The Add Test Result Window for a description of the fields presented on this window.

6. Click the Save button to save the lab test results. The Add Test Result window will close and the new lab test result will be added to the Tests grid on the Medical Event Detail window. It will also appear on the Tests grid of the patient detail window for the patient associated with the current medical event.

To close the Add Test Result window without adding a test result to either the patient record or the medical event, click the Cancel button instead of the Save button. If you have entered any data on the window, a dialog will ask you to verify that you want to close the window without actually adding a lab test result. Click Yes to clear the dialog and finish closing the window or No to return to the Add Test Result window and finish adding the result.

As soon as you start entering data on the Add Test Result window, the text on the Save button will turn bold red, indicating the need to click on the button to save your work.
