You can spot the active field on any window by the blue carets at the beginning of the field. These carets also serve to designate the position of the cursor within a field when editing the data in the field. To make a field "active" simply click on it.

Some fields on a window may be shaded gray — "grayed out." These fields display information which cannot be edited. Nor can they be "made active" by clicking on them.
