Information about specimens is recorded in pathology and other University of Utah Medical Center reports that are kept in the ITS Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) database. This database contains records of almost any interaction the patient has had at the University. These reports are recorded in large text fields in the database, which makes searching and compiling data a difficult task.

Important data relative to a specimen can be retrieved from these reports and entered into HCI's pathology and medical records which are accessible on the Path Reports tab of the specimen window in itBioPath. The information is entered into separate fields, and it becomes easier to search and more useful for research activities. Each type of record will appear different based on the type of record being entered. Pathology records all have the same Overview tab, but they may also have additional tabs based on the tissue type of the specimen being reported on. Medical records may also have specialized tabs depending on both the tissue type and the report type for the medical record. If you would like changes to be made to one of these configurable windows (or if you would like configurations made to for a report or tissue type that does not already have a specially configured window), please contact Research Informatics. Any changes will go through an approval process. These records are also used in CCR. Instead of adding a new record, it may be possible to link to an existing record that has already been entered in one of the other databases.
